Abstract
Most of the time I approach a canvas with no preconceived ideas, which allows the paintings to spontaneously grow.
I am interested in the intersection of the the natural landscape and abstraction. That place where reality dissolves and is replaced with shapes, textures and forms.
The surface of the painting is as important to me as the final painting. Experimenting with surfaces and textures. I explore color relationships, mood and the surprises that happen while painting. Many times this is not an easy process.
Landscape
My works are predominantly landscapes showing my fascination with rock formations, mountains and water.
They represent private, simplified spaces derived from and inspired by nature. I like to find pleasing and repeating patterns of shapes and contrasting colors. Building rich surfaces by layering and scraping with a palette knife has become and integral part of my painting process. Oil paint lends itself for this technique. My use of vivid, rich color is for my personal expression. I
have worked on site several times in New Mexico, New York State and New Jersey.
Still Life
Simultaneously, I've worked on a series of still lives and interiors that play with hidden spaces.
A view within a view is played off against texture and transparency of fabrics. Interior spaces are juxtaposed against exterior spaces.
